Every packed scrubber lives or dies by its packing. The tower shell is just a container — what actually transfers the pollutant from gas to liquid is the surface area, turbulence and residence time your packing provides. Here is how we help customers choose between the three most common PP random packings.
Pall Rings: the Default Choice
PP pall rings are the general-purpose answer for acid-fume absorption, HCl and NaOH scrubbing and most odor-control duties. The windowed wall lets liquid and gas pass through the ring rather than just around it, so you get high efficiency at a low pressure drop. Choose 25 mm rings for small towers and high efficiency, 50 mm for large gas volumes, and 38 mm when in doubt — it is the most forgiving all-rounder.
Hollow Multi-Faceted Balls: Turbulence and Simplicity
Multi-faceted hollow balls pack densely and shed scale well, and the floating variety is used in turbulent-bed scrubbers where the packing itself moves with the gas stream — the constant motion keeps surfaces clean in dusty service. They are also the easiest packing to top up: pour more balls in and the bed levels itself.
Tellerettes: When Fouling Is the Enemy
If your gas stream carries dust, grease or supports biological growth, conventional packing eventually plugs. The open rosette shape of tellerette packing has no tight internal passages to bridge over, so it stays clean far longer and washes out easily during maintenance. It costs more per cubic meter but pays for itself in uptime on paint-shop exhaust, rendering plants and wastewater odor control.
Rules of Thumb
- Ring diameter should be no more than 1/10 of tower diameter to avoid wall channeling.
- Bed depth of 1.5–3 m per stage covers most absorption duties; go taller only with good liquid redistribution.
- Keep PP below ~90 °C continuous; for hotter gas, ask us about RPP or PVDF versions of the same shapes.
- Always order 3–5% extra packing for settlement and future top-ups.
